Critical Linking: January 30th, 2015

In looking for the best opening lines, we took all of this into consideration. What follows are the 50 best. These are the sentences that say: Listen. Come in here. You want to know about this.

I’m a sucker for a book-related list, but for some reason, it’s the ones like these 50 Best Opening Lines in Literature that I love the best.

A new novel by Salman Rushdie being published this autumn will blend “history, mythology, and a timeless love story to bring alive a world – our world – that has been plunged into an age of unreason”. Jonathan Cape will publish Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights in September, seven years after his previous adult novel The Enchantress of Florence (2008).

Wow, I didn’t realize it had been seven years since his last novel for adults, though he has published in several other categories in the meantime.

The author of the bestselling Outlander series, Diana Gabaldon, has teamed up with her local bookstore, 26-year-old Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, Ariz., on a writer-in-residence program. Charles Finch, author of the Charles Lenox mystery novels set in Victorian England, has been chosen as the inaugural resident.

Huh, I hadn’t even considered bookstores themselves having writers-in-residence programs. But boy do I like it.
