Bookish Runways: Literary High Fashion

Hi there! Brandi here. You may have noticed I’m basically as into fashion as I am books. Fashion designers seem to also share these two loves, and sometimes the interests, consciously or unconsciously, bleed together and make for delightfully bookish runways. Below I’ve compiled some of the best, weirdest, and sometimes mostly interpretive bookish runway fashions!

Mary Katrantzou Autumn/Winter 2012 Typewriter Dress

Mary Katrantzou Autumn/Winter 2012

Who doesn’t love a typewriter dress? Particularly when it comes from the whimsical Mary Katrantzou, master of prints.

Andre Tan Autumn/Winter 2006 Book Hat

Andre Tan Autumn/Winter 2006

How about a stylish book chapeau? Ukrainian designer Andre Tan featured more than a few quirky options in his 2006 Fall show.

Zero + Maria Cornejo Autumn 2011 Book Dress

Zero + Maria Cornejo Autumn 2011

I don’t know about you all, but being draped in a silky bookshelf sounds pretty perfect to me.

Maison Kitsune Spring/Summer Great Gatsby Collection

Maison Kitsuné Spring/Summer 2012

Maison Kitsuné’s Spring/Summer 2012 Men’s collection was christened “The Great Gatsby”. Need I say more, old sport?

Dolce & Gabbana Autumn/Winter 2016 Book Purse

Dolce & Gabbana Autumn/Winter 2016

Bringing new meaning to the phrase “book bag” – okay, look, I know it’s not actually that novel* of a concept – Dolce & Gabbana’s recent Autumn/Winter collection featured a pretty amazing book purse.

*Pun 100% intended.

Orla Kiely Autumn/Winter 2015 Library Runway

Orla Kiely Autumn/Winter 2015

For Irish designer Orla Kiely’s 2015 Autumn/Winter collection she turned her entire runway bookish! According to the 70’s inspired fashions were “paraded through a mock library – lined with signs demanding ‘Silence’ from the fashion crowd – where models meandered and browsed the shelves.”

Gianfranco Ferré Spring/Summer 2009 Bookish Dress

Gianfranco Ferré Spring/Summer 2009

Gianfranco Ferré went for geometrical looks for the fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection. Including this stunning gown that I think rather evokes the pages of a book in motion.

Kinder Aggugini Spring/Summer 2012 Book Hat

Kinder Aggugini Spring/Summer 2012

Back to bookish headgear again with Kinder Aggugini’s 2012 Spring/Summer show. Not gonna lie, I would actually wear this. Haters gonna hate. Book nerds gonna book nerd to the max.

Dolce & Gabbana 2011 Ready To Wear

Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 Ready To Wear

Perhaps typography is more your thing. Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2011 Ready To Wear line had enough to fill you to your heart’s content. They had you covered A to Z*.

*Again, pun intended.

Simple Love (live)

Finally, you must watch He Yan’s Autumn/Winter Collection 2009, “Simple Love”. The entire collection was based on Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
