Amazon Will Be the 5th Largest Book Chain: Critical Linking, June 12, 2017

A combination of bookstore attrition and its own startup efforts will make Amazon Books the fifth largest general bookstore chain in the U.S. based on the number of outlets. As BookExpo began, Amazon Books had opened seven outlets with confirmed plans to open six more before the end of the year.

But that’s fifth out of…not many more than five. 

“It’s hard to say what truly moves the needle. Bookstagrammers help in that they get images of your book cover out there (and they make them look so pretty!), and readers need to see a book a couple of times, in a couple of different places, before they are inclined to buy it. According to the marketing Rule of 7, a consumer needs to be touched seven times before they commit to buying a product,” explained author Brenda Janowitz whose latest novel, The Dinner Party, was released last year.

“Education is key,” he said. “Books before boxing has always been our motto.”

For Sweeney — who’s poured everything he owns into the program — his purpose is to give these children the thing he always wanted.

“We treat everyone here like family,” he said. “We motivate each other.”
